1. Take a close look at Boccaccio's Decameron - in his chapter First Day. What does this chapter tell us about Florentine society (life in the city of Florence) on the eve of the Black Death? How did the Black Death transform the city? How does Boccaccio's account reflect the larger historical consequences of the Black Death in Europe?
2. From the lectures and the reading, you should have a fairly good idea by now of how Europe transitioned out of the Middle Ages and began its slow rise to power in the world. What were some of the underlying factors for European society's success in the centuries leading up to the Black Death and Hundred Years War? What role did the cities play? Which cities were particularly important? What were some of the key intellectual movements in the late Middle Ages?
3. Briefly summarize the basic historical events surrounding the Hundred Years' War? What was it? Who fought? Why? What does it tell us about the development of Europe in the Late Middle Ages? How do you think these themes relate to the clip from Shakespeare's Henry V? What does the speech say about how, perhaps, national identity was forming during the Hundreds Years War? For Shakespeare, what characterizes the Englishman? What about the French?
4. What were some of the side effects of the plague – what happened to the Jews? Who were the flagellants? Why do you think these movements were so popular and widespread?
