SOLUTION to ENG-105: English Composition I - Summary of Current Course Content Knowledge.
Hello class,
After reviewing the course objectives for each topic, I realize that I have some prior knowledge in certain areas, while others are entirely new to me. In Topic 1, I have some experience summarizing documents, particularly in my nursing studies where I often need to analyze complex medical information. However, I have to admit that I am less familiar with close reading techniques, and I look forward to improving my skills in this area. Additionally, I have a basic understanding of analyzing writing for audience and purpose as highlighted in topic 2, and I am excited to learn more about concepts like genre and style. Nonetheless, I feel that writing a rhetorical analysis may be a new challenge for me, so as conducting a peer review.
I also have limited experience with visual rhetoric analysis and proper citation methods in Topic 3. As an Emergency Room (ER) nurse, I often need to interpret visual data quickly, so enhancing my visual analysis skills will be beneficial. Moreover, improving my citation skills will also help me in future academic pursuits and in understanding medical research papers. Topics 4 and 5, focusing on reviews and evaluation, are areas where I have some practical experience from my work. As a nurse, I often need to evaluate situations and make critical assessments. However, formalizing this process in writing will be a new and valuable experience. I would also like to point out that the objectives in Topics 6 and 7 regarding commentaries are also entirely new to me.
I am eager to discuss how the writing skills we will learn through the course can be applied in healthcare settings. For instance, how can rhetorical analysis techniques improve patient communication? Additionally, I am also curious about strategies for managing time effectively while completing these writing assignments alongside my work and other studies. Nevertheless, I am excited about the course and look forward to enhancing my writing and analytical skills.

SOLUTION to ENG-105: English Composition I - Topic 1 DQ 1.
Hello class,
As I reflect on my past writing experiences, I recall both challenges and moments of excitement. As a child, I enjoyed creative writing assignments where I could craft stories about fantastical adventures. However, as I progressed through school, academic writing became more prevalent and sometimes felt difficult. I vividly remember struggling with my first research paper in high school where I grappled with proper citation formats and the pressure to sound scholarly.
Currently, as a nursing student and a nurse, writing plays a crucial role in both my academic and professional life. In my studies, I frequently compose essays, research papers, and case studies, which helps improve my ability to articulate complex medical concepts clearly. Conversely, at work, accurate and concise documentation is essential. I write detailed patient notes, treatment plans, and incident reports, where precision can literally be a matter of life and death.
Looking ahead, I anticipate writing will continue to be a fundamental part of my career and personal growth. Nonetheless, it is also essential to take into account insight by Grand Canyon University (2022) that writing may either be an exciting prospect or an intimidating endeavor In my future nursing practice, I believe I may contribute to medical journals or develop patient education materials whereas academically I am considering pursuing advanced degrees, which will involve extensive research and writing. On a personal level, I hope to use writing as a tool for reflection and stress relief, by perhaps keeping a journal to process the emotional challenges of working in healthcare. I look forward to reading about your different writing experiences.

Assessment Description:
Read the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s page on ADHD; the link is provided below. Use the close reading techniques described in Chapter 1 of the e-book. It may be helpful to print off the page and annotate the text. Then, summarize the website in 150-250 words. Your summary should be similar to the example provided in Chapter 1 of the textbook.
Your summary should answer at least three of the questions below:
- What key facts or details does the CDC share about ADHD?
- In addition to the facts, what impression does the CDC create about ADHD? In other words, how does it make readers feel or what does it make readers think about ADHD?
- What would motivate the CDC, which is a government institution, to post a page about ADHD?
- Why, in your view, is the Web page a good or bad method for the CDC to distribute information?
- How do you think the average reader would react to the CDC's page about ADHD?
(Hint: Do not try to summarize every detail. Focus on the main points the page is trying to convey. It is helpful to think of the CDC's page in terms of its sections, rather than its many facts.)
During the week, read and respond to your classmates’ summaries. Did you emphasize the same points in your summary that they did? Did you have the same impression about ADHD after you summarized it? Why or why not?

SOLUTION to ENG-105: English Composition I - Topic 1 DQ 2.
Hello class,
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides comprehensive information about Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) on their website. Using close reading techniques as described in Chapter 1 of Writing with Purpose (2022), several key points emerge from the CDC's presentation of ADHD. First, the CDC (2024) shares important facts about ADHD, defining it as a neurodevelopmental disorder affecting both children and adults. They highlight that ADHD is characterized by difficulty paying attention, controlling impulsive behaviors, or being overly active. The page also emphasizes that ADHD is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders in childhood but may often last into adulthood.
Beyond the facts, the CDC creates an impression of ADHD as a manageable condition rather than a debilitating disorder. They emphasize that while ADHD cannot be cured, it can be successfully treated, presenting a hopeful outlook for those affected. This approach likely aims to reduce stigma and encourage individuals to seek diagnosis and treatment. Moreover, as a government institution, the CDC's motivation for posting this page appears to be public education and health promotion. I strongly believe that by providing clear, accessible information about ADHD, they aim to increase awareness, facilitate early diagnosis, and promote effective management of the condition. This aligns with their broader mission of protecting public health and safety.
The web page format is an effective method for the CDC to distribute this information due to various reasons. First, the page allows for easy updating of content as new research emerges. Secondly, it provides accessibility to a wide audience across different devices and locations and enables the inclusion of various resources and links for further information and support. The clear structure and concise language make the information understandable for the average reader, thus leading to increased comprehension and awareness of ADHD among the general public. I look forward to learning more about the page from your summaries.

ENG-105: English Composition I - Topic 1 DQ 3
Assessment Description:
In the rhetorical analysis assignment, you will be expected to demonstrate an understanding that every text is created for a unique situation and audience. You will need to act on this by analyzing the decisions made by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on their website about ADHD. This includes the persuasive appeals the CDC uses.
Aristotle believed that speakers and writers used three kinds of persuasive appeals. Logos is an appeal to the audience’s powers of reason or logic. Pathos is an appeal to emotions or senses. Ethos is the personal appeal, charisma, or credibility of the speaker or writer. These three appeals are known as the rhetorical triangle because all three sides work together to make a text effective or not.
In your own words, explain the concepts of pathos, logos, and ethos and why they are important appeals to recognize in a text. Next, use the CDC's page about ADHD to analyze the ethos, logos, and pathos in the document.
Consider the following questions in your response:
- What do you think about the logic presented in the document?
- What do you think about its emotional appeal
- What about its appeal to authority or credibility?
- Does the CDC effectively present each of the rhetorical appeals? Why or why not?

Solution to ENG-105: English Composition I - Topic 1 DQ 3
Hello class,
In writing and communication, understanding and effectively utilizing the three rhetorical appeals (ethos, pathos, and logos) is crucial for persuasive and impactful messaging. As outlined in Chapter 7 of Writing with Purpose (2022), these appeals form the foundation of rhetorical analysis and are essential tools for both creating and analyzing texts. Grand Canyon University (2022) refers to ethos as the writer's appeal to authority and can also include the writer's charisma, character, and credibility. In simple terms, it encompasses the writer's character, expertise, and trustworthiness In the context of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) page on Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), ethos is established through the reputation of the organization as a leading national public health institute.
On the other hand, pathos is the appeal to the audience's emotions or passions. Grand Canyon University (2022) defines it as "how the author uses tone to appeal to the audience's emotions or passions when attempting to convince them of his or her point of view". The CDC employs pathos by acknowledging the challenges faced by individuals with ADHD and their families thus creating an emotional connection with the reader. In addition, Grand Canyon University (2022) underlines that logos "means the author's appeal to the audience's logic, intellect, or reason". I believe the CDC's ADHD page extensively uses logos by presenting scientific information, statistics, and research-based facts about the condition.
In my opinion, the CDC effectively balances these appeals to create a comprehensive and persuasive webpage. The logical presentation of facts appeals to the reader's intellect, while the emotional undertones acknowledge the human aspect of the condition. The credibility of the CDC as a source further strengthens the overall message. I believe understanding and recognizing ethos, pathos, and logos in texts is crucial for effective communication and critical analysis. I look forward to analyzing the page further in the upcoming assignment.

Hello class,
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) webpage on Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) serves multiple purposes and addresses a diverse audience. I believe the primary audience is the general public, particularly parents, caregivers, and individuals seeking information about ADHD. However, the content is also valuable for healthcare professionals, educators, and policymakers who need accurate, up-to-date information on the disorder.
Additionally, the CDC's approach to ADHD reflects a belief that it is a significant public health concern deserving of attention and resources. The CDC (2024) webpage presents ADHD as a neurodevelopmental disorder that can be effectively managed, emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis and proper treatment. I believe the United States (U.S.) federal government's decision to publish this information stems from its role in public health education and policy-making. By providing an accessible resource on ADHD, the CDC fulfills its responsibility to inform and guide the public on important health issues. This approach reflects the expectation of the general public that the government will take an active role in addressing and managing public health concerns, including mental health disorders like ADHD. In addition, the content and structure of the webpage demonstrate the CDC's commitment to evidence-based information and practical guidance. I look forward to learning more from your views.

Solution to ENG-105: English Composition I - Topic 2 DQ 2.
Hello class,
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is the writer of the webpage on Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), hence representing a collective of medical experts and public health professionals. This collaboration between authors enhances the credibility of the information presented on the webpage. In addition, the CDC's reputation as a trusted health information source strengthens the ethos of the content which Grand Canyon University (2022) refers to as the writer's appeal to authority and can also include the writer's charisma, character, and credibility. Thus, by clearly identifying themselves and providing additional resources and references, the CDC establishes a strong foundation of authority and reliability.
The primary purpose of the CDC in creating this webpage is to educate and inform the public about ADHD. This purpose is evident in the information provided which covers symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and statistics. By doing this, the CDC aims to raise awareness about ADHD, promote understanding of its impact, and guide individuals toward appropriate resources and interventions. I believe the website serves as a centralized, authoritative resource for anyone seeking reliable information about ADHD, whether they are individuals affected by the disorder, caregivers, educators, or healthcare professionals.
Additionally, the CDC effectively appeals to both logos and pathos in its presentation of ADHD information. The appeal to logos is strong, with the webpage providing factual, evidence-based information throughout. When describing how logos can be achieved, Grand Canyon University (2022) states that an author might use statistics, data, and facts about the issue or topic about which he or she is writing. CDC (2024) achieves this by presenting statistical data and a structured presentation of symptoms and diagnostic criteria. Simultaneously, the CDC incorporates elements of pathos by acknowledging the challenges faced by individuals with ADHD and their families. I believe phrases like " In most cases, ADHD is best treated with" and discussions about the impact on daily life appeal to the emotions of the reader, conveying empathy and hope. I will be glad to know what your views are upon reviewing the webpage.

Assessment Description:
As the name implies, visual rhetoric means the part of communication that involves what is seen, including colors, forms, and the way what we are seeing is laid out on the page. Font type and size can also be included in visual design. The term rhetoric can sometimes cause confusion, so for clarity’s sake; here it means techniques used for the sake of persuasion.
Keeping these definitions in mind, describe an image from one of the CDC website pages on ADHD (http://www.cdc.gov/NCBDDD/adhd/index.html) that you find to be especially powerful and persuasive. What makes it so? Identify the image’s purpose and audience. Please be sure to provide a description of your chosen image so that your classmates and instructor can also analyze your selection.

SOLUTION to ENG-105-ONL5: English Composition I - Topic 3 DQ 1.
Hello class,
Visual rhetoric plays a powerful role in conveying messages and persuading audiences. The image that stands out for me from the CDC website is one about ADHD myth-busting. I believe it presents an excellent example of effective visual rhetoric due to several reasons. One is because, unlike the other text on the page, the image uses a simple, clean design with a pale pink background and black text. At the top, "** ADHD Myth-busting **" is bolded, immediately drawing the eye and signaling the purpose of the content. Additionally, an orange warning triangle icon is placed in the upper right corner, subtly reinforcing that this information is important and challenging common misconceptions.
Secondly, the text itself is concise and clearly formatted thus making it easy to read and absorb. The first sentence directly states that “popular beliefs about ADHD causes are not supported by research” (CDC 2024). I strongly believe that this authoritative framing is persuasive, positioning the CDC as a reliable source countering misinformation. I also find this image powerful because it efficiently exposes multiple myths in a visually appealing and easily digestible format. The warning icon and myth-busting title create a sense of urgency and importance around correcting false information. As Grand Canyon University (2022) notes, "Visual rhetoric, although not a rhetoric on its own, is a part of the communication process that involves the sense of sight and includes colors, forms, and page layout. A visual image can communicate and enhance written text."
The purpose of this image is to educate the general public and also dispel common misconceptions about ADHD. The audience seems to be general readers seeking factual information about ADHD, particularly parents, educators, or others who may be having relations with any person suffering from this neurodevelopmental disorder. I look forward to learning on what you found to be an effective visual from what the CDC has provided on its page about ADHD.

ENG-105: English Composition I - Topic 3 DQ 2
Assessment Description:
Writing an essay can be divided into at least three main parts—the introduction, the body, and the conclusion. Looking further into the essay, the thesis statement can be implicit (implied) or explicit (a line can be drawn under it).Depending upon the length of the essay, the introduction might be more than one paragraph, but the thesis statement should generally appear at the end of the introduction. Body paragraphs follow, and each has its own unique topic sentence, the first sentence that contains the unique supporting point for that paragraph. The conclusion needs a clear transitional word or phrase at the beginning (but not "In conclusion"), and it revisits the thesis and each main point. However, no new information belongs in the conclusion.
Please review the following video Writing Process about writing introduction paragraphs.
For the first essay, you wrote a rhetorical analysis of a public document. Please share your thesis statement for your rhetorical analysis essay. During the week, respond to your classmates with constructive feedback about their thesis statements.

SOLUTION to ENG-105: English Composition I - Topic 3 DQ 2.
Hello class,
As I reflect on the process of writing my rhetorical analysis essay, I find it helpful to review the key components of essay structure outlined in our course materials. Grand Canyon University (2022) emphasizes that "the thesis statement should generally appear at the end of the introduction," which I aimed to follow in my own writing. For my rhetorical analysis of the CDC's ADHD webpage, I crafted the following thesis statement: "The CDC maintains a comprehensive webpage on ADHD and by analyzing the appeals of ethos, pathos, and logos, this essay will argue that the CDC has been effective in communicating key information about ADHD to a broad audience."
This thesis appears at the end of my introductory paragraph, aligning with the guidance provided in the Writing Process video by Grand Canyon University (n.d.). I also aimed to make it explicit, so that "a line can be drawn under it" as described by Grand Canyon University (2022). I believe my thesis outlines the specific rhetorical appeals I will be analyzing (ethos, pathos, and logos) and also states my argument about the CDC's effectiveness in communication. While crafting this thesis, I tried to ensure it would effectively guide the rest of my essay. As Grand Canyon University (2022) notes, "Body paragraphs follow, and each has its own unique topic sentence, the first sentence that contains the unique supporting point for that paragraph.". Thus, my thesis sets up the structure for these body paragraphs, each focusing on a different rhetorical appeal.
Looking back, I see areas where I could potentially strengthen my thesis. For instance, I might be more specific about what constitutes effective communication or clarify what I mean by a "broad audience." I believe these refinements could help sharpen the focus of my analysis throughout the essay. I also look forward to your feedback on how I can refine my thesis statement in the final draft.

Hello class,
After reviewing my rhetorical analysis essay using the provided checklist, I have identified several strengths and areas for improvement. One of the main strengths I discovered is the clear structure of my essay. The introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion are well-defined, adhering to the guidelines. I believe my introduction provides sufficient background on ADHD and the CDC's role in educating the public about it. Conversely, the thesis statement at the end of the introduction clearly outlines the main ideas of the essay, stating that I will analyze the CDC's use of ethos, pathos, and logos to argue for its effectiveness in communicating ADHD information.
Another strength is the credible sources I have used to support my arguments. The essay includes specific examples from the CDC webpage and cited scholarly sources to support my points. For instance, I referenced studies on ADHD prevalence and included quotes from the CDC website to illustrate their use of different rhetorical strategies. Moreover, I believe I have maintained a formal tone appropriate for an academic essay and also demonstrated awareness of my audience by explaining technical terms and concepts related to both ADHD and rhetorical analysis.
However, there are aspects of my essay that need improvement. While I have cited sources in-text, I need to double-check that all quoted, paraphrased, and summarized material have corresponding references on the reference page. I also need to review my grammar and punctuation carefully, as I noticed a few minor errors during this revision process. Additionally, I could strengthen my essay by providing more specific examples of how the CDC uses pathos in its communication. While I mention that they describe challenges faced by those with ADHD, I could delve deeper into how this evokes empathy in readers. This process has been invaluable in identifying both the strengths of my essay and areas where I can improve to create a more polished final draft.

Hello class,
As college students, we will often be required to do assignments that demand rigorous research. However, how can we ascertain the sources we use are credible? The Grand Canyon University offers various materials such as the Writing with Purpose textbook and an Evaluating Website Tutorial video, which provide profound insights on how to evaluate a source. After watching that video and reviewing Chapter 9 of the textbook, I believe the three most important criteria for evaluating websites are authority, accuracy, and objectivity.
Authority is the most crucial as it establishes the credibility of the source. As the video states, when evaluating authority, we should ask questions like who authored the website and whether the author be contacted (Grand Canyon University, n.d.). This helps ensure the information comes from a qualified and identifiable source. Additionally, accuracy is key as it relates to the reliability of the information. Grand Canyon University (2022) notes that for accuracy, we should examine who the publisher is, and the website's URL domain extension among other things. Verifying these details helps confirm the legitimacy of the content.
Objectivity is the third criterion I find most important, as it addresses potential bias. The video explains that for objectivity, we should consider what the goals and objectives of the product are and whether the information is given in detail (Grand Canyon University, n.d.). This helps determine if the site presents a balanced perspective. In my opinion, these three criteria are sufficient on their own to fully evaluate the effectiveness and reliability of a website. Nonetheless, currency and coverage can also provide valuable insight. Additionally, I believe also considering factors like usability and design could further enhance the evaluation. Overall, by carefully examining authority, accuracy, and objectivity we can have a solid foundation for assessing the credibility and value of a website. I look forward to learning about what criteria you deem sufficient.

SOLUTION to ENG-105: English Composition I - Topic 4 DQ 2
Hello class,
For my essay assignment, I chose to evaluate the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) website on Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The URL is https://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/topics/attention-deficit-hyperactivity-disorder-adhd.
The NIMH website on ADHD provides comprehensive information about this neurodevelopmental disorder, including its symptoms, causes, diagnosis, and treatment options. The site is organized into clear sections covering the basics of ADHD, signs and symptoms, risk factors, treatments and therapies, and current research. It also includes resources for finding help and participating in clinical trials. The information is presented in a straightforward, accessible manner suitable for a general audience while still maintaining scientific accuracy.
In analyzing this website, I plan to apply three key criteria which include; authority, accuracy, and objectivity Authority refers to how correct the website or document is and can be evaluated by looking at who authored it and their credibility (Grand Canyon University, 2022). The NIMH, as a leading federal agency for mental health research, clearly has strong authority on this topic. For accuracy, I will examine the qualifications of the publisher and the citations provided. Further, the .gov domain and references to peer-reviewed studies support the site's accuracy. Conversely, objectivity involves assessing potential bias and evaluating if the information is given in detail (Grand Canyon University, 2022). The NIMH site appears highly objective as it presents balanced information on various treatment approaches without promoting any particular option.
Based on my initial analysis, I feel this website strongly matches up to these criteria and is an effective, valuable resource for ADHD information. The government affiliation, scientific references, and balanced content presentation all contribute to its credibility. However, I look forward to conducting a more in-depth evaluation to fully assess its strengths and any potential weaknesses. I have to admit that this process of systematically applying criteria to evaluate online health information has already given me a greater appreciation for the importance of critically assessing sources.

Hello class,
When examining bias in online sources, it is crucial to critically evaluate the information presented. After reviewing Chapter 4 of Writing with Purpose by Grand Canyon University (2022), I was in a better position to evaluate the article Does ADHD Even Exist by John Breeding. Upon doing so, I identified several indicators that suggest the site may have some inherent bias. First, the site presents a very strong and unwavering stance against psychiatric medication for children, with ADHD without acknowledging any potential benefits. As Grand Canyon University (2022) notes, "Bias is when a writer allows his or her personal opinions/views to cloud language or arguments". Secondly, the absolute language used on the site, such as calling psychiatric drugs " harmful," without evidence to support the argument indicates a lack of objectivity and a potential bias in the presentation of information.
Furthermore, the site does not appear to cite or link to any peer-reviewed scientific studies or data to support its claims. Instead, it relies heavily on anecdotes and personal Grand Canyon University (2022) emphasizes that credible sources should use expert opinions and statistics as support. Thus, the absence of such evidence-based support further suggests a biased perspective. Based on these factors, I believe this site likely has an agenda of discouraging the use of psychiatric medication in children, rather than presenting a balanced, objective view of the topic. While the authors may sincerely believe their position, the one-sided presentation and lack of scientific evidence suggest a significant bias in their approach.
To address bias in my own evaluation essay, I would implement several strategies. First, I would seek out multiple perspectives on my topic from a variety of credible sources to ensure a balanced view. I would also carefully examine my own potential biases and preconceptions to avoid unconsciously skewing my analysis. Additionally, I would clearly cite reputable sources to support any claims made in my essay. I am eager to know how you would address bias.

Hello class,
Based on my review of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) website on Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), I believe it meets my expectations and criteria very well. The three main criteria I evaluated were authority, accuracy, and objectivity. In terms of authority, the NIMH website excels by being affiliated with the U.S. government and the National Institutes of Health. As Grand Canyon University (2022) notes, authority relates to how correct the website or document is and can be assessed by looking at who authored it and their credibility. Thus, the .gov domain and clear attribution to NIMH as a leading mental health research agency establish strong authority.
For accuracy, the NIMH site also performs well. Accuracy refers to the qualifications of the website or document including the publisher and institution (Grand Canyon University, 2022). As a government agency, NIMH is highly qualified to provide ADHD information. To further ensure the accuracy of the information presented, the website also cites reputable sources and recent studies. Lastly, I also found the NIMH website to be balanced and unbiased in its presentation of ADHD information. As Chapter 9 of Writing with Purpose explains, objectivity relates to the goals of the site and whether it shows bias. The NIMH site objectively presents multiple treatment options and acknowledges uncertainties about ADHD causes, avoiding bias toward any particular viewpoint.
While the site meets my criteria well, one area that could potentially be improved is including a date showing when the last update was done, this will reaffirm to the audience that all the sections have recent information. However, overall, I believe the NIMH website on ADHD is a highly credible and valuable resource that aligns closely with key criteria for evaluating online health information. The strong authority, accuracy, and objectivity make it a trustworthy source for the public seeking reliable ADHD information.

Hello class,
Throughout this course, one important lesson I have learned is that when incorporating credible sources in our work is crucial for establishing accuracy. This can be achieved through in-text citations and referring to give credit to the original authors of the ideas we use. According to Chapter 2 of Writing with Purpose by Grand Canyon University (2022), an effective in-text citation should have three parts: the head, the body, and the tail. Based on this information, below is a citation I plan to use in my evaluation essay on the NIMH website.
"Authority refers to how correct the website or document is and can be determined by assessing who authored the website, whether they can be contacted, and whether the author has the proper credibility to write about the topic in question" (Grand Canyon University, 2022). By using this citation, I am certain the reader will first understand what authority is before proceeding to my argument on why I think the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) website illustrates authority.
Additionally, following insights from the same chapter, I can use a different head/body/tail combination. For example, According to Grand Canyon University (2022), accuracy refers to the qualifications of the website or document and relates to who the publisher is, what institution has published the information, and whether they are qualified to address the topic. This citation will still be effective in supporting my argument. I believe by using these different head/body/tail combinations, I can effectively demonstrate the authority and accuracy of the NIMH website in my evaluation essay. These citations will not only support my argument but also show my ability to integrate credible sources into my writing, as emphasized in Chapter 2 of Writing with Purpose.

SOLUTION to ENG-105: English Composition I - Topic 6 DQ 1.
Hello class,
As a nurse, I have to admit that this course has been more interesting than I had anticipated. I have had and utilized major opportunities and, in the process, learned about different concepts in the healthcare environment. For example, as I was researching different trends related to Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), I came across one trend on how ADHD presents differently in adults compared to children, particularly in women. According to Abdelnour et al. (2022), ADHD was initially associated with hyperactive boys but there has been an increasing awareness that adults, especially women, often experience ADHD differently.
This trend has been discussed at length by researchers such as Hinshaw et al. (2022) who posit that girls and women with ADHD show a predominance of inattention and associated internalizing problems compared to boys and men with ADHD who display greater levels of hyperactive-impulsive symptoms and associated externalizing problems. This means that women with this condition frequently struggle with inattention rather than hyperactivity, leading to challenges with organization, time management, and maintaining focus (Hinshaw et al., 2022). This leads to difficulties in how they manage both their personal and professional life.
To effectively combat this, the medical community has been working on how they can update the existing diagnostic criteria and treatment approaches to better address ADHD, particularly in adults. In an effort to understand more, I stumbled upon a study by Patrickson et al. (2024) that states that these approaches include developing screening tools that can detect the less obvious symptoms in women adults. Other trends I came across include the change in treatment approaches for ADHD. While medication remains a primary treatment, there has been a growing emphasis on cognitive behavioral therapy by organizations such as the Control for Disease and Prevention (CDC). I believe this shift in understanding and treating adult ADHD represents a significant step forward in mental health care.

SOLUTION to ENG-105: English Composition I - Topic 6 DQ 2
Hello class,
In the previous discussion, I highlighted different trends related to Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) particularly how ADHD presents itself differently in adult women compared to men. Building on this, I have explored different causes and consequences of this shift along with attributing responsibility. One primary cause I found is the historical bias in ADHD research, which predominantly focused on hyperactive boys. This has been supported by scholars such as Abdelnour et al. (2022) who argue that historically, ADHD was initially associated with hyperactive boys. This led to a low understanding of ADHD symptoms, leaving many adult women undiagnosed or misdiagnosed for years. Another factor that has contributed to the trend is the increased awareness of mental health issues in general. Dobrosavljevic et al. (2023) argue that society has become more open to discussing mental health, and adults are likely to seek help when experiencing any difficulties thus leading to late-life ADHD diagnoses.
Additionally, the trend also has positive and negative consequences. One positive impact is the development of more nuanced diagnostic tools and treatment approaches. These approaches include developing screening tools that can detect the less obvious symptoms in women adults (Patrickson et al., 2024). However, a concerning consequence is the potential for overdiagnosis. As awareness grows, the risk of misattributing normal variations in attention and behavior to ADHD grows (Dobrosavljevic et al., 2023). This may also lead to unnecessary treatments and unwarranted medical expenses.
I believe responsibility for the historical oversight largely lies with the medical and research communities. The initial narrow focus on childhood ADHD in boys shaped diagnostic criteria and public perception for decades. However, these same communities also deserve credit for recognizing and addressing this bias in recent years. I believe credit should also be given to adult ADHD advocates and numerous patients who have had the courage to share their experiences, thus raising awareness and pushing for better recognition and treatment options.

SOLUTION to ENG-105: English Composition I - Topic 7 DQ 1.
Hello class,
As I was reading through Chapter 4 of Writing with Purpose, I came across different strategies I can use when writing an introductory paragraph. I believe these techniques will be effective as I write my commentary essay on the rising trend of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) diagnoses. First, I intend to start with a catchy hook that will immediately grab the attention of the reader. As Grand Canyon University (2022) notes, “the purpose of the introduction is to draw readers in and engage readers in writing”. To achieve this, I will begin with a statistic about the prevalence of ADHD diagnoses among children in the United States (U.S.).
The chapter also emphasizes on the importance of discussing the background of a subject, thus I will provide some brief background information on what ADHD is and the trend of increasing diagnoses. By doing so, I believe the readers will be oriented on the topic and its significance. Further, I will conclude the introductory paragraph with a thesis statement to present my main claim. Using these techniques, I wrote the following introductory paragraph:
“Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) diagnoses have risen dramatically in recent decades, with approximately 1 in 9 U.S. children receiving an ADHD diagnosis by 2022 (Danielson et al., 2024). This neurodevelopmental disorder, characterized by persistent inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, has become increasingly prevalent among children and adolescents, raising serious concern across different groups including medical professionals, parents, and educators alike (Li et al., 2023). In this context, this commentary will seek to explore the trend of rising ADHD diagnoses as well as its potential causes, impacts on individuals, and any potential controversies related to this trend. Grand Canyon University (2022) posits that when explaining a subject, it is important to find a pattern of meaning. As a result, the commentary will also argue that a clear pattern of evolving diagnostic criteria and increased awareness emerges as major causes of this trend”. I believe this introductory paragraph will effectively engage the reader as I have utilized all the techniques discussed in Chapter 4, however, I am open to any corrections on any areas of improvement.

SOLUTION to ENG-105: English Composition I - Topic 7 DQ 2.
Hello class,
As I was searching through various sources to learn about the increasing rates of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) diagnoses, I came across several different approaches to the topic at hand. The consensus I came across while researching is that some doctors and scholars believe that the rise in diagnoses could be due to enhanced awareness, and identification of diagnostic criteria to identify and treat cases that were earlier not considered to be ADHD, in the past. Abdelnour et al. (2022) argue that outside diagnostic changes, studies have provided other explanations for the rise of ADHD including increased awareness which is evidenced by ADHD-related searches on Google, with the condition’s popularity being the highest it has ever been in March 2022. Additionally, Honkasilta and Koutsoklenis (2020) pointed out that different associations such as the American Psychiatric Association have undergone several revisions, in a bid to clarify and expand the criteria for ADHD diagnosis. This perspective emphasizes the benefits of early intervention and medication for individuals with ADHD.
Another perspective I encountered was voiced by critics and mental health professionals who argue that the trend is a result of the overdiagnosis problem. Researchers such as Kazda et al. (2021) notes that overdiagnosis which is a major factor in the increase in ADHD diagnoses trend is due to diagnostic inflation which is caused by changing the diagnostic definition, medicalizing behavioral patterns that were previously considered normal, and extending the definition to include ambiguous or mild symptoms. Additionally, they also hold a view that normal childhood behaviors are being pathologized as ADHD, leading to unnecessary labeling and medication for children.
Conversely, my perspective as reflected in my commentary essay acknowledges both views as elements of truth while also advocating for a more balanced approach. I believe the increase in ADHD diagnoses is driven by a combination of factors including improved awareness and diagnostic criteria. However, I also believe that overdiagnosis is a potential cause. My view differs in that I emphasize on the need for a balanced approach that recognizes the benefits of early intervention while also examining our diagnostic practices.
