SOLUTION to UNV-103: University Success- Summary of Current Course Content Knowledge.

Hello class,

Based on the topics we will cover in chapters 1 through 5, I have prior knowledge of several of the weekly objectives to some extent. In Chapter 1, which discusses the story of Grand Canyon University, I am familiar with the historical background of GCU transforming from a Baptist college to the large private Christian university it is today. This is because I have researched the university prior to being a student here. I also have some knowledge about seeking purpose and finding your place at the university as covered in chapter 2. In my undergraduate career thus far, I have spent time reflecting on my purpose and educational goals.

Conversely, chapters 3, 4, and 5 cover several topics that I have limited prior knowledge of. In chapter 3, which reviews important GCU policies including things like the honor code, classroom policies, and Title IX, I have very little familiarity. While I understand general concepts like academic integrity, the specific honor code and various processes, if violations occur, are new information to me. Additionally, time management and wellness strategies discussed in chapters 4 and 5 are also areas I have limited experience with. While general concepts like nutrition, exercise, and stress reduction are familiar, I have not implemented formal academic systems for planning, scheduling, self-care, or tracking my physical and mental well-being.

In addition, there are a few topics from these initial chapters that I would like to discuss further with my instructor and classmates. In Chapter 3, I think diving more into the honor code and what constitutes violations would be beneficial, as would real-life examples of issues that have come up and how they were addressed. I also have questions about resources for international students, as some policies may not apply to or be interpreted the same for students coming from different countries and cultures. Regarding time management in Chapter 4, I would be interested in learning specific systems or apps other students have found helpful for planning, task lists, and prioritizing responsibilities. Finally, discussing wellness strategies from chapter 5 that have proven most effective would be of interest to me. I believe the topics covered in all the chapters does a good job of setting the stage for success in this course and I look forward to expanding my knowledge of all the concepts presented.

SOLUTION to UNV-103: University Success- Class Introductions.

Hello class,

My name is XYZ and I am taking a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program at the university. To say the least, I am excited to take this class as part of my academic journey, I believe it will provide a great foundation to help me progress in my career. As I went through the course materials I came across different concepts that will help me develop leadership and communication skills. These are some of the topics I am interested to learn about. As an Emergency Room (ER) nurse I know these skills are invaluable especially when navigating interpersonal relationships, responsibilities, and challenges that arise on a busy medical floor or in crisis situations. Additionally, understanding concepts like critical thinking and ethics will also support my work in healthcare.

That said, balancing work with full-time coursework will be a bit challenging for me. As an ER nurse alternating day and night shifts, and finding time for reading and assignments will require strategic scheduling and time management which I believe we will explore through the course. Nonetheless, I am hopeful that through open communication with the instructor, I can determine approaches that will ensure success in the course while minimizing stress. Overall, I believe this course will help strengthen my skills and knowledge to have an even greater positive impact on patients.

Hello class,

There are several existing GCU resources that I believe will be useful in helping me become a successful student. Two resources in particular that stand out are the Learning Lounge tutoring program and the Writing Center. As an Emergency Room (ER) nurse and attending the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program, managing my busy schedule while still performing well academically will certainly be challenging at times. The Learning Lounge tutoring program will provide an invaluable resource for me to get additional support outside of the classroom as needed. As a science-focused degree, I know some of the nursing courses will involve materials that will require me to review more thoroughly with a tutor. Having tutors available through the Learning Lounge on evenings and weekends will give me flexible options to fit study sessions into my work schedule as needed. I also think utilizing tutoring will help reinforce the material we will cover throughout this course.

In addition, the Writing Center will be extremely useful since writing is such a fundamental component of demonstrating my knowledge and skills in nursing coursework. According to Chapter 5 of the University Success Guide: Finding Your Purpose, the Writing Center will provide tools that will help complete written course assignments, familiarize with specific writing guidelines and requirements, and improve overall writing skills. As an accelerated program, the writing expectations and assignments will be rigorous. As a result, having online tutorials and resources through the Writing Center will help me develop my writing abilities and ensure I am formatting papers according to the correct APA style from the beginning. Both of these resources directly support my academic goals and achieving success in the coursework. The flexible scheduling of the Learning Lounge and convenient online Writing Center tools will make it feasible for me to utilize them as an essential academic nurse. I am confident these resources will help me maximize my potential as a student at GCU.

SOLUTION to UNV-103: University Success- Topic 1 DQ 2.

Hello class,

As an individual juggling between work and pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree, I know effective time management and avoiding procrastination are crucial skills for balancing work, studies, and personal life. The article "Crux of Time Management for Students" by Felix Bast offers valuable strategies to combat procrastination and improve productivity that is particularly relevant for me as a nursing student and a professional. This article emphasizes that "Procrastination – putting off, or delaying, or deferring the tasks indefinitely – is the foe of productivity" (Bast, 2016). As an Emergency Room (ER) nurse and a student, I understand the importance of prompt action and how delays can have serious consequences. To be proactive in completing work and course deadlines, the article suggests two main approaches: breaking down large tasks and using the Pomodoro Technique.

Breaking down significant tasks into smaller, manageable pieces is an effective strategy. As the article states, "A significant task such as writing an article can be broken down to doable mini-tasks, and these tasks can be scheduled" (Bast, 2016). In regard to my studies, this means dividing tasks such as a research paper into smaller steps like literature review, outlining, drafting sections, and editing. By scheduling these mini-tasks, I believe I will make steady progress without feeling overwhelmed.

The Pomodoro Technique is another useful method described in the article: "Another method is called the 'Pomodoro technique', in which a big task is attempted with a timer set at 20 minutes. After 20 minutes of attempting the task, take a 5-minute break. Repeat this cycle four times, then take a longer break of 15–30 minutes" (Bast, 2016). I believe this technique will be useful for focused study sessions between shifts or during breaks.

By adopting these proactive strategies, I will mitigate the effects of procrastination, improve my time management skills, and successfully balance my ER nursing career with my studies. The article also underscores that "working smart and making slow but steady progress on the right things are much better than pointless slogging" (Bast, 2016). This approach will not only help me meet deadlines and complete work efficiently but will also contribute to my overall success in all aspects.

SOLUTION to UNV-103: University Success- Topic 2 DQ 1.

Hello class,

Through my academic journey, I have come to understand that the intricacies of course components are crucial for success in higher education. The "How do I Know I am Learning" resource by the Grand Canyon University provides valuable insights into the educational process at the University, shedding light on the relationship between topic objectives, assignments, and rubrics. Upon reviewing this material, I believe that topic objectives, assignments, and rubrics work together in a cohesive manner to guide and assess our learning. Topic objectives set the foundation by clearly outlining what we should be able to do by the end of each topic. As the resource states, "Objectives are brief statements that explain what you, the student, will be able to do by the end of the Topic" (Grand Canyon University, n.d.). These objectives provide us with a clear understanding of the expected learning outcomes.

Additionally, assignments serve as the practical application of these objectives, allowing us as students to demonstrate our understanding and mastery of the material whereas the rubric completes this educational trinity by providing a detailed framework for assessment. According to Grand Canyon University (n.d.), we should always use the rubric or grading criteria to guide us as we complete assignments. This will ensure that our work aligns with the instructor's expectations.

Throughout this course, I have learned several strategies to complete assignments accurately and efficiently. One key approach is to carefully review assignment instructions and rubrics before starting any work. This ensures a clear understanding of the requirements and expectations. Additionally, utilizing the Course Calendar has proven invaluable for managing time effectively and staying on top of deadlines which in turn supports better assignment completion. I believe by implementing these strategies and understanding the interconnectedness of course components, I can navigate my academic journey at Grand Canyon University with greater confidence and success.

Hello class,

Title IX is a powerful federal law that extends to aspects of the Grand Canyon University (GCU) community. At its core, Title IX "prohibits sex and gender-based discrimination in education programs and activities that receive federal funds" (Grand Canyon University, 2022). Upon reviewing the module provided by the university, I realized that this comprehensive legislation addresses a wide range of issues that include sexual harassment, misconduct, and violence, creating a framework for ensuring equity and safety for us students.

As a GCU student, whether attending classes on campus or online, Title IX offers us crucial protections and support. The policy applies equally to all students, regardless of gender or location, demonstrating the university’s commitment to creating an inclusive and safe learning environment. Additionally, Title IX also establishes a clear process for GCU to "provide for the prompt and equitable resolution of sexual or gender-based harassment or sexual violence complaints" (Grand Canyon University, 2022).

One of the most significant ways Title IX supports me as a GCU student is by providing clear definitions of prohibited behaviors. This clarity helps me and other students understand what constitutes unacceptable conduct, from sexual harassment to dating violence and stalking. Additionally, the policy outlines multiple reporting options, including confidential resources, which empower students to come forward and seek help in a way that feels safe and comfortable for them. Furthermore, Title IX also ensures that I have access to supportive measures and campus resources, even if I choose not to file a formal complaint. This approach recognizes that healing and support are essential, regardless of the legal or administrative actions a student may or may not pursue. Moreover, the policy also protects against retaliation for reporting incidents, thus creating a safer environment for students to speak up about misconduct. I believe understanding our rights under Title IX is a crucial part when navigating our educational journey at GCU.

SOLUTION to UNV-103: University Success- TOPIC 3 DQ 1.

Hello class,

As an Emergency Room (ER) nurse pursuing my Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree at Grand Canyon University (GCU), I find several principles from GCU's mission, vision, and Christian mission that I can implement in my career, personal, and spiritual life. One key aspect that resonates with me is GCU's commitment to cultivating a "compassionate Christian community." As an ER nurse, compassion is at the core of my work. I can further embrace this principle by consistently showing empathy and kindness to my patients, even in high-stress situations. This aligns with GCU's goal of "serving others in ways that promote human flourishing”(Grand Canyon University, n.d.).

Additionally, GCU's focus on developing "innovative thinkers" and "effective communicators" is crucial in my field. This is because I can implement these principles by staying current with medical advancements, proposing creative solutions to challenges in the ER, and honing my communication skills to better interact with patients, families, and colleagues. Furthermore, the concept of "global contributors" inspires me personally to think beyond my immediate environment. I can seek opportunities to participate in medical missions or volunteer in underserved communities where I can apply my nursing skills to make a broader impact.

In regard to my spiritual life, the Christian worldview of GCU encourages me to integrate my faith into my work. I believe I can do this by viewing my nursing career as a calling, finding purpose in serving others, whilst also relying on my faith for strength and guidance in challenging situations. Conversely, GCU also emphasizes "placing the interests of others before our own". This aligns perfectly with the nursing profession as I can continue to embody a selfless attitude in my daily work, while always prioritizing patient care and team collaboration over personal gain. I am confident that by implementing these principles from GCU's mission and vision, I can enhance my effectiveness as a nurse, contribute positively to my community, and grow both personally and spiritually.

SOLUTION to UNV-103: University Success- TOPIC 3 DQ 2.

Hello class,

Taormino (2010) states that there exist misperceptions about time commitments, particularly when trying to balance work, family, and school, that can impact online learning success. As I reflected on how true or false the state is, I came to understand that time management is crucial to my success both as a nurse and a student. Some of the strategies I have used in the past to ensure I effectively manage my time include scheduling specific times each week to complete coursework and study for exams. Additionally, I also find it helpful to break large assignments into smaller sections and set deadlines to keep myself accountable.

Reflecting on the materials we covered in topic 3, I can see how adopting some additional strategies may help improve my time management. The University Success Guide: Finding Your Purpose emphasizes scheduling specific blocks of time intended solely for studying on a weekly basis rather than trying to fit it in around other obligations. This block scheduling provides dedicated, distraction-free time to focus on coursework which I think would be beneficial. Additionally, the article on student preparation for distance education by Mark Taormino also underlines the importance of developing routines, setting weekly goals with corresponding due dates, and accounting for time spent on administrative tasks to fully utilize the flexible learning environment. Going forward, I plan to implement these strategies of block scheduling study time and setting organized weekly goals with due dates. I believe by doing this I will effectively manage my time.

Over time, some strategies I have found most effective are completing assignments early in the week to avoid procrastination and leaving extra time for unexpected delays. Further, breaking down larger assignments into smaller sections has also helped me stay on track to finish on time. As a nurse, I am accustomed to prioritizing tasks efficiently according to importance and urgency. As a result, maintaining these organizational skills will serve me well as I progress toward my degree while balancing work, family, and school responsibilities.

SOLUTION to UNV-103: University Success- Topic 4 DQ 1.

Hello class,

As I continue with my academic journey at Grand Canyon University, I have come to recognize the importance of developing strong academic relationships that will support my success. One of the relationships I plan to develop is with faculty members who will play an integral role in my learning and development. In each of my nursing courses, I plan to engage with my professors through interactions before and after class, and during office hours via email correspondence and other relevant channels. By establishing these lines of communication, I believe my professors will better understand my strengths and weaknesses so they can provide guidance tailored to my needs.

University staff outside the classroom are also invaluable resources. I aim to utilize tutoring services, especially in science and other complicated courses that are new to me. Regular contact with tutors will help me reinforce key concepts from class and fill any gaps in my understanding early before major assignments. Additionally, career services advisors can aid my transition from undergraduate study to graduate work or entrance into the workforce. Keeping in contact with an advisor will allow me to learn about opportunities like internships and ensure I am taking the classes needed for my career aspirations. As noted by Wei et al. (2023), early career planning and skill development are crucial for nursing students to successfully transition into the workforce.

Moreover, positive involvement with other nursing students is equally important for networking, collaboration on group projects, and reducing academic stress through shared experiences. I plan to join any associations within the university to make connections with peers in my major. Participating in association activities and community events with other members will foster friendships and a support system during challenging times (Ziegler et al., 2019). Overall, I am confident that a balanced approach to tapping into relationships with faculty, staff, and fellow students will optimize my chances for success in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at Grand Canyon University.

Hello class,

Grand Canyon University (GCU) has provided room for me to transition to a career of my choice, nonetheless, establishing strong support systems is a crucial step I have to take in my journey. While attending college and work means less time with my long-time support network of family and friends, I recognize the need to cultivate new relationships that will encourage both my academic and personal well-being.

Upon reflection of the campus resources, I have realized that I am not familiar with any pre-existing groups specifically aimed at supporting nursing majors. To fill this gap, I plan to start a peer support group of my own that brings together other BSN students. First, I will reach out to my classmates in the nursing program to gauge interest in forming a study and support group. I am convinced that by developing communication with people who have the same expectations in studying and facing same challenges, we will be able to create a supportive environment and group. Our group would meet bi-weekly to discuss coursework struggles, share study strategies, and provide a sympathetic ear during periods of heightened stress or self-doubt that are common in nursing education.

In addition to facilitating connections with classmates, the group will aim to foster wellness through promoting healthy coping mechanisms for managing stress. Some of the activities will include online interactive discussions thus encouraging transparency around issues like test anxiety. This will create an environment focused on both intellectual and emotional support. Oluwaseyi (2024) underlines that peer support groups can significantly improve academic performance, reduce stress, and enhance overall well-being among nursing students. As a result, I am committed to creating a support system that addresses both my academic and personal wellness needs. By taking the initiative to form this group I believe I can create a supportive environment that will not only benefit me but also my fellow nursing students at the university. This proactive approach will help ensure that we have the necessary support to thrive in our challenging but rewarding field of study.

Hello class,

Scholarly research refers to peer-reviewed sources that are typically found using academic databases or library resources. According to the Evaluating Sources Guide by Grand Canyon University (n.d.), these sources include academic journals, books written by experts in a field, and formally published encyclopedias and dictionaries. Additionally, these sources have also gone through a rigorous review process by experts to evaluate the accuracy and validity of the research presented (Grand Canyon University, n.d.).

My previous experience using scholarly research has been quite limited. In my previous years in school, most of my writing assignments did not require the use of academic journals or peer-reviewed articles. We were often able to find general information on our topics through basic internet searches or brief scans of encyclopedia entries. However, in my years of college, I have been challenged to explore databases and search more specific terms to locate recent, credible sources written by experts.

There are a few key reasons why using scholarly research is so important in an academic setting. First, scholarly sources present information and data that has undergone scrutiny through the peer review process.  Taherdoost (2022) states that this helps ensure that only well-researched findings backed by evidence are published. Additionally, I believe scholarly writing tends to have a more focused scope than general sources. This is because authors seek to make an original contribution to a focused area of study through critical analysis rather than broad overviews. Perhaps most importantly, scholarly research is expected in college to meet course-level proficiency. Our instructors want to see that we can find and evaluate appropriate academic support beyond simple Google searches.

While the transition has certainly required more time and effort on my part, I have come to appreciate how scholarly research has enhanced my writing and expanded my understanding of course topics. Moving forward, I plan to utilize scholarly sources to continue developing high-quality work expected at the university level.

SOLUTION to UNV-103: University Success- Topic 5 DQ 2.

Hello class,

I believe the General Education Competencies that best relate to Grand Canyon University's mission are Effective Communication, Critical Thinking, and Christian Worldview. These competencies align closely with the university's goal of equipping students "with knowledge of the Christian worldview, instilling in them a sense of purpose and vocational calling that enables them to be innovative thinkers, effective communicators, global contributors, and transformative leaders who change their communities by placing the interests of others before their own. (Grand Canyon University, n.d.)"

As an Emergency Room (ER) nurse and a student, I know that effective Communication is crucial as we must clearly convey information to patients, families, healthcare team members, and also our instructors. Grand Canyon University (n.d.) emphasizes that "Communication skills guide you to understand others and have them understand you in turn." I strongly believe that this competency will help me succeed both as a student and in my nursing career by improving my ability to communicate complex medical information clearly and empathetically.

Additionally, critical thinking is essential in healthcare, where I must constantly analyze situations and make quick, informed decisions. Critical thinking involves considering and understanding the assumptions that make the thought valid or not and developing your own clear and relevant thoughts (Grand Canyon University, n.d.). This skill will be invaluable in my studies and in providing high-quality patient care. Moreover, the Christian Worldview competency aligns with GCU's mission as a "missional, Christ-centered university." While not mandating specific values, it challenges us students to consider our present values and assess our beliefs and behaviors based on those values. This competency will help me integrate my faith with my nursing practice, ensuring I provide compassionate, ethical care that respects the dignity of all patients. These competencies will lead to my success by helping me become a more effective communicator, a sharper critical thinker, and a nurse who integrates faith and ethics into practice.

Hello class,

As a nursing student at Grand Canyon University (GCU), I have learned the importance of understanding the academic and financial implications of not passing or dropping a class. Through my personal experience and conversations with my counselors, I have gained valuable insights into these situations. First, if I were to fail a class during my time at GCU, it would delay my overall degree progress and potentially prevent me from advancing to certain upper-division courses that require prerequisites. Conversely, it could take longer to graduate if I opted to retake the failed course.

In terms of financial responsibilities, if I were to drop or fail a class, I would still be responsible for paying for that course. GCU has a no-refund policy after a week into the classes, thus dropping a class later in the semester means I would not get my tuition money back. Further, if I failed, I would have to pay a certain amount to retake the class in the future. This could get costly, especially when we take into account that scholarships and financial aid might be affected too if it takes extra time to complete the degree.

To help avoid these undesirable outcomes, I have several measures put in place following advice from my counselors. One, in case I started to struggle with a class, I would reach out to my professors and academic advisors for support right away. This would be followed by meeting with my tutor or establishing a study group. Moreover, I could also choose to withdraw from the class before the refund deadline to avoid an F on my transcript. As a last resort, I would take an incomplete to buy more time if needed. Moving forward, I plan to be very proactive about time management, prioritizing my coursework, and getting academic assistance early on if issues arise. I believe having these layers of support and backup options in place will help me maximize my chances of success in each class and make steady progress toward graduation without economic setbacks.

Hello class,

As a nurse and a student, managing personal finances is crucial for maintaining a balanced life. As I reflect on the invaluable information provided in the article Make a Plan to Manage Personal Finances by Michael Scheibach, three key strategies stand out for me. These are developing a household budget, always comparing prices, and prioritizing spending. In as much I have been using strategies such as setting strict monthly spending limits, I believe that a combination of these techniques can significantly impact a personal budget.

Developing a household budget is the foundation of sound financial management. As Scheibach (2014) notes, this starts with identifying how much money is coming in and how much is going out to get a handle on financial matters. This practice provides a clear picture of income and expenses, allowing for better allocation of resources. As a working student, most of the days I have to juggle between work and studies, I believe a well-structured budget can help me manage irregular income from shift work and allocate funds for tuition and any other educational expenses. Additionally, this will also help identify areas where spending can be reduced, such as unnecessary subscriptions or excessive dining out.

Always comparing prices is another valuable strategy that can lead to substantial savings over time. “Once you find something you want to purchase, begin comparison shopping and you might be surprised how much money you can save by following this rule versus buying spontaneously”( Scheibach, 2014). This approach is particularly beneficial for us students and who often face significant expenses.  Going forward, I will utilize price comparison websites and apps to make this process more manageable and allow for quick and efficient decision-making even with a busy schedule. Additionally, prioritizing spending is essential for maintaining financial health while pursuing educational and career goals. Scheibach (2014) emphasizes the importance of distinguishing between needs and wants, a strategy I also aim to implement.

Hello class,

My passion has always been to create a positive impact through healthcare and as a step towards maximizing that impact, I chose to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. The aim is to expand my knowledge and skills in order to advance my career in healthcare and I believe the BSN program meets that criteria as it equips me with a comprehensive set of competencies crucial for the dynamic environment of emergency medicine.

One of the most valuable aspects I will gain is a strong theoretical foundation in medical-surgical nursing. Through comprehensive coursework covering topics like pathophysiology, pharmacology, and health assessment, I will expand my clinical reasoning abilities. I find this to be of critical importance as being able to quickly understand a patient's condition based on their presenting symptoms is crucial in the fast-paced Emergency Room (ER) setting where nurses must prioritize care. As noted in a study by Taylor et al. (2021), BSN-prepared nurses demonstrate significantly higher clinical competence and critical thinking skills compared to their associate degree counterparts, which is essential in high-stakes environments like the ER.

Additionally, my critical thinking and decision-making abilities are being sharpened through different courses such as University Success, case studies, and clinical simulations. While I work as an Emergency Room (ER) nurse, I believe this will prepare me for the diverse and unpredictable situations common in emergency care. Moreover, the program emphasizes leadership and communication skills, which are vital in any collaborative healthcare setting.

When presenting these enhanced skills to potential employers, I plan to highlight specific examples from my BSN education that demonstrate my readiness for advanced practice in emergency nursing. I will discuss my experience with evidence-based practice projects, showcasing my ability to apply research findings to improve patient outcomes. I will also emphasize my leadership capabilities by describing instances where I took on additional responsibilities or initiated process improvements. Nonetheless, I look forward to learning about other effective ways from you.

Hello class,

At the onset of my University Success course seven weeks ago, I viewed college as an individual pursuit accomplished through dedication alone. However, through varied lessons and experiences, I have gained a deeper understanding of what behaviors best facilitate success at this level. As I reflect on my seven-week journey, I have been able to acknowledge areas of growth as well as opportunities for continued improvement as I progress in my nursing degree.

Reflecting on what has worked best for me as a student, I have found that creating a structured study schedule has been invaluable. By allocating specific time blocks for different topics and sticking to them, I have managed to balance my coursework with my demanding ER shifts more effectively. Additionally, active class discussions and assignments have deepened my understanding of the material and improved my retention. For instance, the assignment on budgeting strategies not only reinforced the course content but also honed skills directly applicable to my student life.

However, not everything went as smoothly as I had hoped. Time management proved to be a significant challenge for me. Balancing full-time work, family responsibilities, and coursework often left me feeling overwhelmed. There were instances where I underestimated the time required for assignments and this resulted in last-minute rushes and unnecessary stress. Moreover, as I started online learning in the early weeks, I found it difficult to navigate the platforms.

Nonetheless, I have identified several strategies to ensure my educational success. In the next course. I plan to be more proactive in my time management by creating a detailed weekly schedule that accounts for work, study, and personal time. This be possible by using digital tools like calendar apps and reminders to stay on track. I believe this approach will help me address challenges before they become overwhelming. With the insights and strategies I have learned from this course, I believe I am better equipped to face the challenges ahead and to excel in my quest for knowledge and professional growth.
