This unit traces Europe and Asia as it moves through the centuries that are commonly called the "middle ages" in the Western context. In the first week of this unit, we will learn about how the western-most part of the Eurasian landmass developed a distinct regional identity -- how, in other words, the area of Europe became the cultural entity defined as "Europe." This story will cover the rise of medieval states, the spread of Christianity, and ultimately the confrontation with Islamic civilization, first in Spain and then in the Near and Middle East. The second week of the unit will look at China, Japan, and East Asia in general through the rise of the Mongol Dynasty, which will be the topic of the next unit.
