1. The central theme of this week's reading is the growing division between the two parts of the former Roman Empire, the Latin west and the Byzantine east. Explain some of the differences between the two.
2. One of the most significant issues of the late medieval period was that of how to split power between the Church and the secular rulers. This issue came to a head in the so-called Investiture Controversy between Pope Gregory and Henry IV, referenced in the section on papal reforms. Briefly explain what this was and then describe the positions of the two main combatants, Pope Gregory VII and the German King Henry IV. Why do you think this was such an important issue?
3. Based on the reading for this week and the lecture, what do you think were the main trends in European medieval life from 800-1200 C.E.? What were the important aspects of a newly emerging western European identity?
4. What role did the Crusades play in the emergence of European identity? How did the Crusades shape the relationship between Latin and Orthodox Christianity, between Christians and Jews, between Christians and Muslims, between Christians and heretics? Make sure that you use the sources.
