This is a monumental unit, spanning of the most important issues and period we will cover together this semester. We will start with the foundation of Greek civilization and its spread throughout the Mediterranean world and well beyond. The "classical" period of ancient Greek civilization felt a deep stamp on world history, impacting literature, art, philosophy, and science in countless ways. Politically, the Greeks established precedents for concepts of citizenry and democracy as well as oligarchy and tyranny. Ultimately, the fragmented Greek city-states would join into an empire under Alexander the Great of Macedonia, who would lead armies from Greece to India, setting the stage for the Hellenistic era. After our study of Greece, we will turn to the two most significant empires in the east and west, Rome and China. The histories of these states -- their formation, maturation, and dissolution, will create the context for the second week of the unit and the foundation for much of what is to come as we move from the ancient world into what we might call the medieval context.
