- Sally Student has been asked to summarize a passage from her PHI-105 textbook. In your own words, what is a summary? (Your response should be between 25-50 words please.)
A summary refers to a concise overview of a larger text or piece of information that captures the main ideas and key points while omitting unnecessary details to allow the reader to quickly grasp the essence of the original text without having to go through the entire source material.
- Summarize the following passage in 25-50 words:
From Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail”:
“In any nonviolent campaign there are four basic steps: collection of the facts to determine whether injustices exist; negotiation; self purification; and direct action. We have gone through all these steps in Birmingham. There can be no gainsaying the fact that racial injustice engulfs this community. Birmingham is probably the most thoroughly segregated city in the United States. Its ugly record of brutality is widely known. Negroes have experienced grossly unjust treatment in the courts. There have been more unsolved bombings of Negro homes and churches in Birmingham than in any other city in the nation. These are the hard, brutal facts of the case. On the basis of these conditions, Negro leaders sought to negotiate with the city fathers. But the latter consistently refused to engage in good faith negotiation” (King, 2018, p. 75).
Martin Luther King, Jr. outlines four steps of a nonviolent campaign, asserting that Birmingham had experienced racial injustice, segregation, police brutality, unjust court treatment, and unsolved bombings. Despite these "hard, brutal facts," city leaders refused to negotiate in good faith with Negro leaders who were seeking change through nonviolent means.
- Write a paragraph interpreting the meaning of the passage taken from Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail”: (Your response should be at least 100 words in length please.)

Martin Luther King Jr. outlines the four steps of a nonviolent campaign which are; gathering evidence of injustices, negotiating for change, maintaining moral high ground, and direct action. He asserts that Birmingham's civil rights movement followed these steps, yet faced pervasive racial injustices, including segregation, police brutality, unjust court treatment of African Americans, and unsolved bombings of black homes and churches. These "hard, brutal facts" justified Negro leaders' attempts to negotiate with city authorities. However, despite the overwhelming evidence of discrimination and the reasonable pursuit of negotiations, city officials consistently refused to engage in good faith hence denying the legitimate demands for equality and justice. This necessitated a more direct action.
- Based on the guidelines for the first essay assignment and the assigned readings for this week, what is a rhetorical analysis? What does it mean to analyze a text? (Your response should be between 50-100 words please.)
Based on this week’s reading, rhetorical analysis can be described as closely examining and evaluating the rhetorical strategies and techniques an author uses to communicate their message to an audience effectively. To analyze a text rhetorically means critically assessing the author's use of rhetorical appeals (ethos, pathos, logos) while considering the rhetorical situation such as the audience, occasion, or purpose. The goal of a rhetorical analysis is to determine how well the rhetorical strategies align with and achieve the author's intended purpose for that particular audience and occasion.
