Solution to UNV-103: University Success - Managing Your GCU Experience.

SAMPLE 1

Topic 3 Managing Your GCU Experience

Directions: In order to gain insight into your college and professional experiences, answer the following questions. Record your responses to all questions on this document (the boxes will expand should you require more space).

What are some of the social and professional organizations/associations  that are specific to your program outside of GCU? Which one interests you the most, why? (Minimum 100 words total) Note: The organization/association you discuss here can be specific to your community or your future profession. These can be associated with your work, gym, church, friends, family, business connections, mentors, etc. There are several key associations that are specific to my program outside GCU, they include; the National League for Nursing (NLN), and the American Nurses Association (ANA) among others. However, as an ER nurse, I am most interested in the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA). The ENA provides specialized education, resources, and networking opportunities specifically for emergency nurses. Their conferences and certifications would help me stay current on best practices in emergency nursing. Additionally, the ENA also advocates for emergency nurses and patients at the policy level. Joining would allow me to connect with other ER nurses, advance my clinical knowledge, and potentially get involved in leadership roles to help shape the future of emergency nursing.
Set and share a goal for how you will become involved in a social /professional organization. Discuss how involvement in these types of groups could positively affect you as a student/employee? (Minimum 100 words total) My goal is to join the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) and attend at least one local chapter meeting or event per quarter. I also aim to complete the Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) certification offered by ENA within the first year after I join. Involvement in the ENA could positively impact me as both a student and an employee. As a student, it would provide access to additional educational resources and scholarships to support my Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) studies. Furthermore, networking with experienced ER nurses could lead to mentorship opportunities. As an employee, ENA involvement would enhance my clinical knowledge through continuing education, potentially leading to improved patient care and career advancement. Participating in ENA advocacy efforts would also allow me to have a voice in shaping emergency nursing policy and practice. Overall, I believe ENA membership would support my professional growth and allow me to contribute to the emergency nursing field.
What do you need to achieve academically to be successful in the future? Are there any GPA requirements, volunteer hours, or employment experience associated with your future career that you learned more about or that you would like to learn more about?
(Minimum 100 words total)
To be successful in the future, I need to maintain a strong academic foundation in nursing theory and practice. Achieving and maintaining a GPA of at least 3.0 is the first step I need to take for potential future graduate studies. While not strictly required, I am also certain that volunteer experience in healthcare settings can enhance my skills and make me a more competitive job candidate. Many employers prefer ER nurses to have 1-2 years of med-surg experience first, so I may need to gain that before specializing in emergency nursing. Conversely, I would like to learn more about certification requirements for emergency nursing, such as the Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) credential. Understanding the specific clinical competencies and continuing education needed to maintain certification would help me plan my professional development. I am also interested in learning about leadership paths in emergency nursing, such as charge nurse or nursing director roles, and what additional education or experience may be needed to pursue those in the future.
Review the "How It All Began: History" section of Chapter 1 in the University Success Guide to locate and explain GCU's Mission and Vision, Five Mission Competencies, and GCU’s Christian Identity and Mission. (Minimum 100 words total) GCU Mission and Vision: GCU's mission highlights its Christ-centered identity and commitment to innovative, adaptable solutions for global challenges. It strives to foster a compassionate Christian community, encourage virtuous behavior, and advance human flourishing through academic excellence. On the other hand, its vision is to be a leading Christian university that educates individuals to lead and serve.   Five Mission Competencies: The university also upholds five mission competencies: effective communicators, critical thinkers, global citizens, a Christian worldview, and responsible leaders. GCU’s Christian Identity and Mission: GCU describes itself as an interdenominational Christian institution dedicated to upholding its core beliefs and values. It also cultivates a community rich in a Christian worldview through activities like weekly chapel services, Bible studies, and spiritual mentorship. This nurturing environment promotes both academic and spiritual development for students.
The GCU Academic Catalog lists the university's General Education (GE) Competencies. Note: While the General Education Competencies support the GCU Mission competencies, they are not the same competencies. (The GE Competencies are listed in the box to the right.) Review Ch. 2 of the University Success Guide to locate and describe the five GE Competencies in your own words. (Minimum 100 words total) University Foundations Foundation courses at GCU are designed to develop essential skills for academic success, self-management, community involvement, and program-specific knowledge, thereby creating a solid foundation for students' future studies. Effective Communication This competency emphasizes that communication is essential for daily interactions, though it is often misunderstood. Additionally, it highlights that developing effective communication skills is crucial for achieving goals and successfully navigating various situations. Christian Worldview The curriculum centers on a Christian worldview and foundational values that promote a fulfilling and virtuous life.   Critical Thinking According to GCU (n.d.) critical thinking goes beyond merely identifying faults and evaluating ideas. It includes understanding underlying assumptions, forming coherent thoughts to make well-informed contributions to society. Global Awareness, Perspectives and Ethics Highlights the importance of developing qualities like empathy, embracing diversity, and respecting differing perspectives on various issues in order to become a global citizen. Being a global citizen means understanding different viewpoints on matters like history, religion, and values from around the world. Grand Canyon University strives to educate students who can promote ideals like peace, justice, and living a purposeful life both personally and professionally.
The box to the right lists some personal situations you may encounter as a student at GCU. For each situation, list the individual steps you would take, and anyone you may need to contact in order to resolve each one.
