The Reception of the Venetian Ambassadors in Damascus, 1511

The scene in the painting is of great world-historical significance. It symbolizes many important aspects of world history around 1500. We know from the lectures and the textbook that Venice became the dominant economic power in 15th century Europe as a result of its control of trade with the east. This trade, until the expansion of the Ottoman Empire, came through Mamluk controlled Egypt and Syria, as we have seen from Ibn Battuta’s account. How does the painting reflect some of the historical trends we have been discussing for the past few weeks? What important economic, social, and religious issues does this painting present? Be sure to relate your answer to specific points made in the lectures and textbook.
