HIST 120: World History to 1500- Module 6: A Central Asian Epic: The Mongols and the Turks
This is one of my favorite units to teach in world history, because it centers on what was perhaps the most important engine of historical change in the Eurasian world until the end of our period in 1500. This engine was the ebb and flow of unity among central Asian nomadic peoples that allowed them, when they joined forces in large enough numbers, to conquer the civilizations that surrounded them. We will spend the first week of this unit focused on the conqueror Genghis Khan and the subsequent Mongol dynasties that came after his death. The Next week will look at the rise and fall of the great Turkic leader Tamerlane, who, it could be said, created the conditions for a large-scale reaction that we now call "modernity."
