SOLUTION to XA3002: Professional Communication Competency Discussion
Hello everyone,
Understanding formatting features as well as how to correctly integrate sources is crucial in gaining the trust of peers and professors both as a healthcare professional and as a student. In the emergency room, timeliness and accuracy are of utmost importance when communicating critical patient information to other providers and documentation that can affect treatment (Troyer & Brady, 2020). As such, improper or lack of citations in patient charts or research papers would call into question the veracity and thoroughness of the content.
As a student, citations demonstrate thoughtful consideration of work from other scholars and this helps avoid plagiarism, which can damage one's reputation and career. According to Kington et al. (2021), the ability to describe complex clinical situations and at the same time, identify the sources appropriately proves assurance and understanding. Moreover, with the lives of patients literally in one's hands in the ER, presenting information in a coherent, citation-conscious way helps assure others that the facts and recommendations can be fully trusted.
Additionally, a proper degree of effective communication and adequate emotional intelligence are significant to developing trust, proper analysis of the patient's needs, and improving positive relations (Raeissi et al., 2023). This is especially critical in highly stressed emergency situations where indifference to response, active listening, and willingness to change one's response are essential to dispel patients apprehensions and gain their cooperation. To develop these crucial interpersonal skills, one has to consider what kind of response would be appropriate and how it will affect the dialog. For example, an impatient tone when a distressed family struggles to provide a clear history could further distress the patient and damage the therapeutic relationship. On the other hand, acknowledging strong emotions with compassion and speaking calmly can help de-escalate tensions. Overall, proficiency in sourcing information credibly and connecting with others empathetically is both professional and academic competencies that are imperative for optimal emergency nursing.
