Reflection: GCU Code of Conduct-Online
The student Code of conduct and Academic Standards policy of Grand Canyon University lays down the codes of conduct expected from each and every student. These policies are developed in a bid to encourage ethical learning practices and perceptions as well as; embrace the society's standards of the University. Consequently, as students, when we learn such standards and adhere to them, we maintain and cultivate civility, truth, and success within the academic society. Reflecting on all the information that I got from the university policy handbook, I will examine specific violations such as plagiarism, how to avoid academic dishonesty, and how I would hold myself and my peers accountable.
Code of Conduct and Academic Integrity Violations
One form of academic integrity violation highlighted in the handbook other than plagiarism is "using materials or technology not authorized by the faculty member to complete an assignment" (Grand Canyon University, 2023). An example of this could be completing an essay with help from an AI writing tool to create a piece of work without permission from the instructor. I believe this standard is in effect to ensure we as students are developing our own critical thinking and writing skills.
Additionally, Grand Canyon University (2023) highlights that a code of conduct violation is "behaving in any manner that creates a disruption, or a hostile or offensive educational environment for a student, faculty member, or staff member". An example could be repeatedly interrupting class with inappropriate comments or outbursts. This additional standard exists to maintain a respectful and productive learning environment for all members of the university community.
Plagiarism
Plagiarism is the act of presenting someone else's words, ideas, or work as your own without proper attribution. I think students may plagiarize for various reasons, including lack of confidence in their own writing abilities, poor time management leading to last-minute rushed work, misunderstanding of proper citation techniques, pressure to achieve high grades, ease of access to online information, and the temptation to copy and paste.
Avoiding Academic Dishonesty
To avoid academic dishonesty in group work, students should employ strategies such as dividing tasks and responsibilities, communicating openly about individual contributions, and reviewing and integrating work collaboratively. Conversely, when handling individual assignments, students can avoid academic dishonesty by starting assignments early to avoid time pressure, taking thorough notes and organizing research materials, learning and using proper citation methods, seeking clarification from instructors when unsure about assignment requirements, and utilizing university resources like tutoring services for additional support.
Accountability
I hold myself accountable by thoroughly reviewing GCU's policies, committing to honest academic practices, and seeking help when needed. I also encourage peers to do the same and be willing to address concerns if they observe potential violations. By fostering a culture of integrity, we can collectively uphold GCU's academic standards.
Conclusion
As a student of GCU, it is extremely important to follow the GCU Code of Conduct and Academic Standards in order to create a healthy learning environment and instill ethical values into our future professional selves. I strongly believe that by being aware of these policies, avoiding academic dishonesty, and promoting accountability, we can contribute to the university's mission and our own personal and academic growth.
